Breathe, Shine and Seek to Mend
Breathe, Shine and Seek to Mend was an art installation, installed in the auditorium of Hobart Baptist Church in 2019 to coincide with that year’s Dark Mofo Festival.
The centrepiece is a sculpture, a large human figure wrapped in hessian, and tied to a 6m high cross. This sculpture was then tied to the pillars at the front of the auditorium. Attendees were then invited to sit in the church pews.
I wanted to ask questions about cover-up and about the Church in general. To explore the ways the Church has used power to reveal and bury truth, to follow Jesus and hide from him.
A prayer accompanied the installation: “Jesus, I wanted to seek you, but I drifted away, covered you up. Help me to give seeking you another go. Amen.”
